WQCA587
I got a pair of Uniden handheld radios for a recent ski trip (very handy and they work well on the mountain). They are General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) radios that also broadcast on the seven non-interstitial Family Radio Service (FRS) channels 8-14: a commonly-called "22 channel radio" that broadcasts on 7 GMRS & FRS channels (the "interstitial" channels at GMRS power levels) + 7 FRS-only (at FRS power) + 8 GMRS-only channels. GMRS allows significantly greater broadcasting power, but that only matters up to a point. Antenna height and line-of-sight is much more important.
Using a GMRS radio legally requires an FCC license for the honor. So, I shelled some electronic cash and got one. It'll be valid for five years. And I'm thus the proud owner of call sign WQCA587. (Was this all overkill? Should I have just gotten some FRS radios which require no license? Maybe. But I did it all anyway.)
The license also enables me to share the privilege with some of my "blood relatives," so the radios may be handy when visiting with family on China Lake.
