It’s a Blue, Blue Jungle
My new sofa moves in Tuesday. I've done a wonderful re-arrangement of my apartment, given the constraints of size and wiring that I have to live with. There are quite a few:
- TV and Cable-modem need to be along wall with cable jack.
- Computer needs to be near cable modem.
- Stereo needs to be close to my computer.
- Computer needs to be near TV as I don't have a DVD player as yet; I just use my laptop to play DVDs (video on the TV and sound through the stereo).
- Speakers need to be near enough to stereo to avoid wiring trouble.
I got a new desk for my computer. The other was too big and imposing and didn't have a keyboard tray (nor could one be simply added because of the pen drawer). The new one is very consistent with a much better aesthetic for me. I'm very obliged to a friend, Bridget, who helped me realize this.
Originally when furnishing my place, I was thinking that dark wood and dark blues would be my motif. I should have taken taken a note from Walt's advice to the Sherman Brothers about writing the music for The Jungle Book: "Have you read Jungle Book? Yeah, that's right, nice mysterious, heavy stuff. That's not what we want to do. ... Don't be too heavy."
A number of months ago, Bridget and I went dropped into a furniture store because she was needing something and wanted to check it out. I saw a desk that really caught my eye. So, as I contemplated my re-arrangement, Bridget reminded me of the desk over which I'd lingered. It is perfect. I went out and bought it the next day:

A motif of translucency and various blues, glass, titanium and other grey metals, suits me much better.
With a new desk and a new sofa on the way and the constraints I have, I re-arranged my place. Here's the layout change, down to the inch. It only includes the living room and dining room area. To make enough space for it all to work, I removed the legs from my small dining table and managed to store it for the time being.
The Layouts: Out with the old. In with the new. (These are PDF format because they scale well.)
I compared my measurements to the apartment brochure that shows the apartment layouts with dimensions of major walls. Those measurements in the brochure are pretty wildly inaccurate. That little bit of knowledge will be a warning and a help whenever I look for a new place.
